A Look at Counting

Most children of preschool age are learning to count.  Educators and observant parents know there are many stages of that learning trajectory.

One four year old might use the touch of a finger to ensure an accurate count, another might be able to identify a quantity just by taking a quick glance.  However, there is one important connection that is not always understood by the child no matter his or her counting prowess; it is the connection between the count and the quantity.  The last number they counted IS the quantity.

Ask a young child "how many are there?" before AND after they count.   This simple question will connect the intangible process of counting to something very real and relevant, a quantity!
